People keep telling me that social networking on sites like Facebook and Twitter are key to the modern business. We've handed this job to Robert as I've tried and find little time to do it. When we joined Twitter this month I linked it to my phone and for a few days kept checking for updates.....I've now deleted the app from my phone! February and it's the first 2012 update, no idea where January went. Seth our web designer has been encouraging me to update this more often, so I'm going to try and update it every week as well as having just started on Twitter, improving our Facebook presence and the new Abraxas Photography YouTube channel! When I started this blog I thought there's always loads going on so I'll update it every other day, that then went to every week and now it's not even monthly just because I don't find the time to do! So loads of things going on including meeting Baron Wolman who was the photographer for Rolling Stone magazine. He's just published a book on his Rolling Stone years and there's some great stuff in there including Hendrix. Janis Joplin, Zeppelin, Doors etc. I went along with a good .. I received a call from out of the blue a couple of weeks ago. Bedford College asking me if I could teach on a couple of their photography courses. I haven't taught now for over five years and didn't know if I could make the time to do it, but I offered to help out on one evening a week until March. A week of variety with some school website shots, Citizenship Ceremonies, Weddings and also a corporate event. Bedford Autodrome was the venue for a group of 15 Dutch businessmen driving a range of supercars throughout the day. A quick stopover, arriving for a meal and a night at The Bedford Swan Hotel and then at the end of the driving the following day they were off in their limos to Cranfield for their private plane. Came across a photographer's website this week and noticed that the images weren't entirely genuine. The images within a 'gallery' section were not from actual weddings but from shots taken on a 'weekend wedding workshop'and worse still, some were from a picture library. Off to The Barns Hotel on Wednesday evening for the launch of their 'Riverside Bar'. It's something that used to be open years ago as a pub style bar, but for some reason they closed it. It's a 'champagne' launch so looking forward to that, even though I've been asked to do some photography during the evening. I'll arrive early and do as much as i can for the first hour. Many of the bookings and enquiries we have taken for weddings next year are at new venues. Manor Houses and properties with big gardens (acres of land), are seeing an opportunity to hire out their grounds for wedding receptions. Each week I think things will quieten down and normal service can be resumed, but everyday I seem to be loading lights and equipment into the car and off to another job. This week it's been a series of artists on the Flipside Recrd Label. We created some really nice simple style images that will look great on album covers and posters. Bit slow on the blog again, various things going on. As part of a team I competed the North Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in June for Marie Curie Cancer. A total of £89,000 was raised on the day. Hectic month with album and book designs, shooting weddings, pre-wedding meetings, preview collections and a lot of new couples in for 2012 and 2013. Several calls from magazines and papers looking to run images from Sunday's Italian Festival, so a lot of time is being spent sorting all of these out. Four or five random calls from people asking when and where they can view the images of Gino D'Acampo... I don't even know who these people are! Couldn't believe the popularity of celebrity chef Gino D'Acampo at the Bedford Italian Festival last Sunday. Despite the weather the turnout was still good and enthusiasm wasn't dampened by the relentless rain. At the Barns Hotel Wedding Show on Sunday (Bedford), a really good event with a fair number of visitors. It was good to have time to talk to those interested, because some shows are so busy that it gets impossible to talk to everyone. A lot of people asking about dates for 2013, but a lot asking for summer Saturdays in 2012, many of which are fully booked. We have several summer Saturday's in 2012 and 2013 that are fully booked. It may surprise some people that dates are booked so far in advance and that couples plan ahead, but they can be certain that they have the right suppliers for their day. We speak to so many people who intentionally leave things until quite late thinking it will be less stressful. Portrait sessions can be really enjoyable but they are incredibly hard work, especially when you have a group of 13 come in with kids running around everywhere. Plus one of our lights started smoking during the shoot, apart from the small cloud of smoke and smell I don't think they noticed! A DJ we recommend (BlueMark) came over to our office a few days ago and lit our office up with some light displays. They look great but we have to be careful it doesn't look like a nightclub in here. Its a really nice subtle effect of changing lights on our white walls. Mark has some great lighting effects for events which most DJ's don't have. Two wedding shows in the next few days, tomorrow evening Thursday 17th March we'll be at The Barns Wedding Open Evening from 6-9pm, its not a full show but a good opportunity to look at the venue with 4-5 recommended suppliers. A busy January and February for wedding shows. There are far too many shows happening these days, we stick to the main Bedford ones but you can visit one almost every weekend. The Central Milton Keynes show is one we don't do, but that should really be changed to the 'Wedding Photographer's Show' as there are so many there.
